| Q.If you don't slurp, noodles won't taste as
good? |

(Original Question raised by Mark B)
Foreigners are often fascinated by "slurping"! (I heard Japanese
people say if you don't slurp noodles won't taste as good! I think that
only after having experienced good shop ramen does one understand what
you refer to as "devoting yourself to the bowl".) Some Japanese
slurp huge amount of noodles in one go then bite off excess, others only
pick up very little noodles at a time... (I might sound silly to concern
myself with this, but many foreigners TRY their best to eat ramen silently,
even if it means taking long time & noodles getting soft & soup
getting cold...) |

Slurping or not to eat Ramen is just a matter of difference of etiquette
when eating. In Japan, slurping and making noises when eating noodles is
not at all against etiquette, so they do not mind making noises and just
concentrate on eating Ramen slurping. (Though Japanese knew it is not accepted
when eating spagetti in Italian restaurants so that they meticulously avoid
making noises.) If some Japanese claim that when they don't slurp noodles
Ramen won't taste as good , it is because of psycologial effect. They need
to put extra energy to avoid slurping and cannot concentrate well to taste
ramen fully. That's all! There is no other reason. |
