| The ramen shop named after a French word "Merci" (meaning "Thank you" in English) has been supporting students of Waseda University loceted nearby by serving them high quality ramen at very low price for over 40 years. It is unusual to find ramen shops with Fresnch word as their names. The reason of this unique name is that it used to be a coffee house before they specialized itself in ramen. But the word "Merci" sounds as if it is reflecting students' grattitude toward this ramen shop. |
Because of its similarity of location , M erci is often grouped with Ramen Jiro. (* Both of them are located near from the rivaling universities respectively.)
But compared with unconventional ramen at Jiro, Ramen at Merci looks more
orthodox. Its stock is basically made from pork & chicken bones, and
vegetables, seasoned by soy sauce. They add stock made from dried small
sardines, smell of which most characterizes ramen at Merci.The other characteristic of ramen at marci is its topping, especially fried vegetables. Even ramen is topped with fried bean sprouts which usually boiled rather than fried. |
 Ordering system at Merci is simple and normal. After taking a seat, you would be asked by the witress (a middle aged woman) your order. Merci offer only one kind of soup, which is soy sauce tasted, with the exception of Tanmen and Gomoku Soba which are seasoned by salt. Then your choice is depending on what kind of toppings you prefer. The most popular menu at Merci seems to be "Yasai (Vegetable)" which is topped with fried assorted vegetables. But "Yasai" does not have chasu. If you insist on Chashu and still want to order "Yasai" , your order should be "Yasa Cha-" (abbreviation of Yasai Chashu). |
 Like other ramen shops introduced in this web site, Merci requires you to
wait in a line at its peak time, around lunch time. So if you would like
to avoid waiting in a line, our recommendation is to visit Merci at 1:30pm
or later.Merci is enjoying popularity among not only university students,
but also high school boys, who would proceed to Waseda Univerity. They
would spread charm of Merci to their future scool mates. |
